With Ubuntu different versions only work on the computer your using; that have the right drivers for the video card and and other drivers. You can start with on Ubuntu Version and then if it works good; try a next higher version until you find the newest version that will work on your computer.
The 'Update Manager' will work if Ubuntu still has updates available for the operating system, Ubuntu software version that you are able to use.system. Without the right Ubuntu Linux Version, the computer may work slower because the proper boot driver is not available, or the computer might have to make it use more RAM to make the video driver able to work.
